About
Simon Cooley has been teaching for 25 years and has always been a working sculptor.

He regularly leads short courses for Central St Martin’s School of Art in London and has been a workshop leader and taught at a wide variety of schools nationwide.

Introduction to Stone Carving (4 days)
This course provides an introduction to the nature of stone and the means by which we can work with it.

Using the traditional techniques of the sculptor and stonemason, methods of transferring ideas onto a block and finding form within it will be discovered, and the aim is to complete a sculpture and return home with a finished piece.

Stone Carving and Metal Sculpture (4 Days)
Learning the basics of stone carving and working with metal on a forge, the aim will be to create a sculpture of your own that uses both materials.

Sculpting the Head in Clay

Stage 1 (3 days)
An intensive 3 day modelling course using time-honoured techniques to construct in clay a portrait from a model.

Sculpting the Head plus mould-making and casting (5 days)
Half the time will be spent making a clay head from a model, and the other half of the time will be used to create a mould and plaster cast. You will be able to take home your plaster cast at the end of the course, for permanent keepsake.

Metal Sculpture (4 Days)
The simple ancient techniques of hammer and fire are as direct a process as stone carving is in the making of sculpture.

This workshop explores the use of metal in the making of sculpture, and is centered around the use of the forge and the malleability of hot metal. Basic instruction in welding and cutting techniques will also be part of the course.

This is an ideal workshop for beginners, but also offers much to people with some experience of the material.
