				Description
Deborah Baynes has offered residential pottery courses since 1971. Deborah has taught thousands of students the rewarding challenges of clay and the potter's wheel from throwing to Raku and salt glaze firing. Deborah now offers her pottery courses at her studio at Nether Hall in Suffolk.Accommodation
The house is listed Grade II and believed to date from the early 1600's. The large oak-beamed rooms provide comfortable accommodation for those on the course and an ideal setting for Deborah's extensive collection of pots. These include work by famous modern studio potters through to antique salt glaze and 15th Century Chinese pieces. There is also a large library of pottery-related books and magazines which students will find a useful source of inspiration and ideas.
The Workshop
The workshop is situated in the 18th Century coach house and stables, still with cobbled floors and original fittings. It is spacious and well equipped with a de-airing pugmill that produces excellent quality throwing clay. There are also three kilns and nine electric wheels so that each student has access to a wheel at all times.
Typical Day
Every course begins informally with an excellent three course dinner and plenty of wine, giving a chance to settle in and meet your fellow potters. This is usually a group of between 6-8, some total beginners, others with potting experience.
Each morning, after a substantial breakfast (or not if you can't face it!) tuition begins.
The timetable each day follows a similar pattern starting with demonstrations, which are followed by tuition and making. A combination of frequent demonstrations, practical tips and personal tuition means that even those who have never touched clay before are soon making surprisingly successful pots. We break at intervals for tea, coffee and lunch. Formal tuition ends at about 4pm (often later). Students are free to work on for as long as they like.
Salt Glaze Course
This specialist course is aimed at students with some previous experience. The course is tailored to the need of each individual so, whether you are a professional or keen amateur, you should find the experience extremely rewarding.
Meals
Dinner on arrival and all breakfasts and lunches are included, but we do not provide a daily evening meal. There are several local pubs and restaurants to explore, if you can tear yourself away from the studio!
